Round up your droogs, pop on some Ludwig Van, and get ready to viddy well at The Frida as we kick off a series of four of legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s films this December with his mesmerizing and controversial 1971 classic A CLOCKWORK ORANGE! Screens December 6 & 7 at 7:30pm, and December 10 at 5:15pm and 8pm; advance tickets available at The Frida Cinema’s box office, and online at http://boxoffice.printtixusa.com/fridacinema/advance?i=2424!

A spectacle of style and audacity that the likes of which studio cinema has rarely seen, Kubrick’s seminal, genre-bending film (is it sci-fi, drama, comedy, crime – all of the above?) is based on Anthony Burgess’ 1962 novel of the same name, and is set in a dystopian England in the near future. Malcolm McDowell stars in his iconic performance as Alex DeLarge, a young man who enjoys classical music and “ultra-violence,” as he leads his ruthless gang of “droogs” through robberies and savage attacks. Narrated by Alex himself, the film chronicles his exploits with all the pomp and exhilaration befitting its protagonist – until the tables turn on Alex, and he finds himself the subject of a controversial government experiment intended to radically reform him.

A commentary on the role of freedom and choice in the examination of human good vs. evil, A Clockwork Orange was well received upon release, topping the 1972 French box office, and landing four Academy Award nominations – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay (Stanley Kubrick), and Best Editing (Bill Butler). The film took home the Best Director award from the New York Critics Circle, the Pasinetti Award from the Venice International Film Festival, and the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation.
