Dennis Hopper rides into the sunset - Saturday May 29, 2010

h1 Monday, May 31st, 2010

Actor-Director Dennis Hopper died  at the age of 74 following a long battle with prostate cancer Saturday morning.

From his directorial debut in ”Easy Rider” to wacky and twisted performances in ”Rebel Without a Cause,” ”Apocalypse Now,” and ”Blue Velvet,” this man that lived on the edge and always did it with a sly wink at the cameras, will be missed.

Our support and good vibes from The B Side go out to his family, friends and fans.

CONCRETE WALLS at The LOFT presents: VERBS - Thursday June 3, 2010 - San Pedro

h1 Friday, May 28th, 2010

CONCRETE WALLS at The LOFT presents:

Derric Eady
Jay Lizo
Anna Mayer
Feodor Voronov

June 3 - July 30, 2010
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 3, 6 - 9 pm (in conjunction with San Pedro Art Walk)
Concrete Walls Projects at The Loft presents VERBS, four Los Angeles based artists using language as a means of process. This group exhibit is sponsored by Angels Gate Cultural Center, The San Pedro ACE district and curated by Devon Tsuno.

Derric Eady’s new video project, “Open City Underground” depicts geometric landscapes constructed with video game engines. Using text as structure, Eady’s virtual landscape foresees future collaborations. Eady is a 2005 MFA graduate from UC Irvine and a BFA graduate from the Kansas City Art Institute. He is an environmental artist for Infinity Ward’s “Call of Duty 2″ and has shown his work at Andrewshire Gallery and most recently in GPS at Cypress College Gallery.

Inspired by the 1950 Gabriel Pomerand book of Concrete Poetry, “St. Getto of the Loans”, new work by Jay Lizo includes a metamorphosis of appropriated symbols envisioned in video animation and drawing. Lizo currently has a solo exhibit at Art13 in Houston, Texas, has recently shown at the Torrance Art Museum, Angeles Gate Cultural Center, and is the co-founder of Monta Vista Projects. Lizo has a 2005 MFA from UC Santa Barbara and a BFA from Ringling.

Anna Mayer uses language, fire, and intention to propose relationships. She speculates what an individual can do for others and by herself. Her clever play of words, interests in alternative ceramic firing and incredible feats of gravity are on display in VERBS. Mayer currently has a solo exhibit, “People Concerned” at Sea and Space Gallery in Highland Park, and is part of the collaborative duo CamLab recently showing at Dan Graham and completing a residency at Three Walls in Chicago. Mayer is a 2007 MFA graduate from Cal Arts and an undergraduate from Washington University and Chicago Art Institute.

Painter, Feodor Voronov deconstructs the aesthetics of words to construct obsessive systems of formalism. Starting with a vocabulary list, Vornov’s new series of paintings using acrylic and spray paint on canvas uses text as a catalyst in abstraction. Vornov is originally from the former USSR, but currently lives and works in Culver City. He is a 2009 MFA graduate from Claremont Graduate University, and a BFA graduate from CSULB.

Prince stars in this tale of a misunderstood musician struggling to get his music accepted as he zooms around Minneapolis on a purple motorcycle. Prince and the Revolution are at their best in the electrifying concert scenes, where the rock god is captured on film at height of his powers. A sexy debut by Apollonia and the madcap villainy of Morris Day and the Time add to the fun. Don’t miss this special sunday screening!!

Hitchcock’s quintessential comedy-thriller is a roller coaster of suspense and humor. An advertising executive is mistaken for another man by foreign spies, and the ruthless killers chase him across the midwest as he tries to clear his name. The most memorable and iconic sequences in cinema abound in this film as Hitchcock directs incomparable performances by Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. One of the all time greats!!!
