THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS, 1991, Universal, 102 min. Dir. Wes Craven. Claustrophobic terror and a savage satire of Reaganomics drive this tale of a teenager who tries to keep his family from being evicted but ends up trapped in the home of his psychotic landlords.

DAY OF THE DEAD, 1985, UFDC, 102 min. Dir. George Romero. The third film in George Romero’s “Dead” series follows a group of underground scientists and military men who struggle to retain their humanity in a world populated by zombies.

SOCIETY, 1989, Zecca Films, 99 min. Dir. Brian Yuzna. Billy suspects something isn’t quite right in his upper-class suburban neighborhood, and he’s right: Cannibalism and incest are just the beginning of the horrors going on behind closed doors.

THE BROOD, 1979, New World Pictures, 92 min. Dir. David Cronenberg. While experimenting with a way for his patients to manifest their inner rage as actual physical growths, Dr. Hal Raglan (Oliver Reed) encounters Nola (Samantha Eggar), a mother distraught at having her child taken away. She soon becomes pregnant again - but this time, something horrible and homicidal grows inside her womb.

Director William Lustig in Person!
MANIAC, 1980, Analysis Film Releasing, 87 min. Dir. William Lustig. Character actor extraordinaire Joe Spinell wrote the script and plays the title role in this deeply disturbing portrait of a man whose abusive upbringing turns him into a serial killer.

Dracula & Bride Of Frankenstein - Classic Universal Horror - Wednesday & Thursday October 28 & 29 - New Beverly

h1 Saturday, October 24th, 2009

Wednesday & Thursday October 28 & 29

Classic Universal Horror

1931, USA, 75 minutes
dir. Tod Browning, starring Bela Lugosi, Helen Chandler, David Manners, Dwight Frye, Edward Van Sloan, Herbert Bunston

Its brilliant sets and stunning camerawork, together with Lugosi’s elegantly sinister performance, make Dracula a memorable and influential classic.

Bride Of Frankenstein
1935, USA, 75 minutes
dir. James Whale, starring Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Valerie Hobson, Ernest Thesiger, Elsa Lanchester, Gavin Gordon

The best of the Frankenstein movies–a sly, subversive work that smuggled shocking material past the censors by disguising it in the trappings of horror. Some movies age; others ripen. Seen today, Whale’s masterpiece is more surprising than when it was made because today’s audiences are more alert to its buried hints of homosexuality, necrophilia and sacrilege. But you don’t have to deconstruct it to enjoy it; it’s satirical, exciting, funny, and an influential masterpiece of art direction. - Roger Ebert

But if you can get $70 or in donations, Knott’s will give you a ticket to Haunt on Halloween Night (October 31st), and a ticket to the Pre-Scare Dinner. Plus prizes for the top fundraisers, including Front of the Line Passes.

So how do you sign up? Well, alas, it is not that easy, but let me walk you through the steps.

First, go to this website.

Then place “Give Kids the World” in the Find a Nonprofit box on the right side of the main page.

Then click on “Give Kids the World, Inc.” at the top of the new page.

Then at the “Give Kids the World, Inc.” main page, click on Register for an event in the box at the top of page.

And then “Halloween at Knott’s Scary Farm’s First Annual Scare-A-Thon” on the new page.

Then follow the steps to register.

If you can’t go yourself on Halloween, I have set up a donation page.

And for those who don’t know the charity.
